My aim is to make prints that are beautiful. This is what brings me joy. I tend towards very fine detail which is perhaps unusual for linocut, known for its bold, graphic qualities. It seems I am combining that strong look, especially when working in monochrome, with a lighter touch of delicate carving. In any case, I love the time I can spend at my art table at home, whether designing, tracing, carving, inking up or pressing and pulling a print- every stage of the process is a wonder to me.
I juggle my printmaking with working in a school library and caring for my family. When my daughter was born, before returning to work, I took one afternoon a week in an Adult Education class to learn Life Drawing. This enduring interest, along with a very special friendship with an artist I have known almost all my life, has kept me learning and loving the adventure of finding and fine-tuning a creative voice!
Around five years ago I took a weekend linocut course with Nick Morley in Margate. I highly recommend his workshops and books, along with Laura Boswell whose work I am really impressed by. I read everything I find about linocut and woodcarving-also a method of relief printmaking. As I am impacted by an auto-immune illness the (often literal) pains I go to over my craft can leave me frustrated. But with each print I make, I continue to learn how to carve more expertly and print for the cleanest impression; I love to glean all I can from experience so I can improve my practice. I would be so bold as to say I am working on a self-led printmaking apprenticeship. I would love to be a master of the craft. I am glad to begin sharing that journey and have you see my work so far.
